Profile: Barbara E Lewis
International Award Winning Artist
Specialising in traditional equine art
Barbara is primarily a commission artist. She works closely with her clients in order to ensure the resulting artwork reflects what the owner wishes to see. As Barbara prides herself on her outstanding drawing skills, photos and other reference materials that are not of a high standard are no barrier to the production of an exceptional piece of art, as the portrait of Phar Lap amply demonstrates.
The artist has a long time association with the thoroughbred racing industry in New Zealand, having made this her main (but not exclusive) focus for over 21 years as an artist specialising in portraits of horses. Barbara is renowned for the accuracy of her equine art work and her ability to capture the essence and character of her subjects with detail and precision. Henrietta, the dowager Duchess of Bedford and the Auckland Racing Club (14 Derby winners from 1990 to 2004) are among her clients.

"I like people to know where they stand with me. I’m not one for pompous bluster – can’t abide it. (I call it the “If you can’t dazzle ‘em with brilliance, baffle ‘em with bull” school of thought). There’s enough of that in the world already and I figure I don’t need to add to it. I prefer this strange little notion called ‘honesty’. As rare and as old fashioned as it apparently is now, I’ve always found it appealing.
I like my work to speak for me. When all is said and done my paintings speak FAR more eloquently than I ever could; brilliant conversationalist I am not. What you have in me is an artist who is able to bring to life on canvas what it is you want to see, someone willing to work at it till it’s just right. Painting horses comes as naturally to me as breathing. And that’s why I do it.
If you believe an artist should be someone who will listen and give their all to produce as much excellence as an artist can muster, then we should talk."
